The air-raid shelter located in Plaza de Arriba stands as one of the most poignant and significant reminders of Elda’s recent history. Built during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), this underground space was designed with the vital aim of protecting the civilian population from the threat of aerial bombardment. History and Construction

In the final years of the Spanish Civil War, the province of Alicante – and, in particular, the town of Elda – came to play a key strategic role in the Republican rear. Elda was not only home to a thriving manufacturing and footwear industry – capable of meeting the needs of the conflict – but, towards the end of the war, it also temporarily became the seat of the Government of the Second Republic and the last capital of the Republican side (the famous ‘Posición Yuste’ in the vicinity of Elda’s district).

This significance made the town a potential target for enemy aircraft. To ensure the safety of local residents, the Local Civil Defence Committee promoted the construction of several underground shelters. The Air-Raid Shelter was one of the most important due to its central location and its capacity to accommodate hundreds of people.

Carved directly out of the rock using mine galleries, it has several strategic entrances to facilitate quick and orderly access from the surface. Its vaulted interior design included ventilation features and winding passages to mitigate the effects of bomb shock waves.
